Project Details:

Carlingford Lough Greenway – Section III

AG Wilson was appointed by Newry Mourne & Down District Council (NMDDC) as principal contractor to deliver a landmark cross-border link: a 1,025m long, 4m wide elevated boardwalk connecting  Victoria Lock to the Republic of Ireland Border. This technically complex and environmentally sensitive project combined engineering ingenuity with sustainability and community engagement.

Engineering Excellence

The project demanded precision in a challenging coastal environment. Marine-grade piled foundations were installed within a sensitive tidal zone, requiring specialist techniques to minimise ecological impact. Uneven revetment walls posed a significant challenge, which the AG Wilson team overcame using a bespoke piling system to ensure secure and accurate positioning. Prefabricated modular platforms streamlined installation, while GPS setting-out guaranteed precise alignment and tolerances throughout the build.

Sustainability Leadership

Sustainability was at the heart of this scheme. By using 570 tonnes of repurposed steel, the team achieved a verified 98% reduction in carbon emissions compared to new steel. All timber was sourced from certified renewable suppliers, and materials were procured locally wherever possible to reduce transport-related emissions and support local businesses. Shared transport arrangements for crew members further minimised the project’s carbon footprint.

Environmental Protection

Working within a sensitive coastal habitat required careful planning and specialist oversight. A 45-metre gabion structure was constructed to protect the adjacent salt-marsh, and the Environmental Clerk of Works carried out a full ecological survey to identify and mitigate risks before work began. To further safeguard marine life, a trained Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) was embedded on site to monitor activity and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. These measures ensured the project maintained ecological balance while delivering critical infrastructure.

Community Engagement

Public engagement was a major priority. The project achieved an ‘Excellent’ rating under the Considerate Constructors Scheme thanks to clear signage, proactive communication, and rapid response to any local concerns. A comprehensive Traffic Management Plan, including tailored stop/go systems and temporary traffic lights, ensured works progressed efficiently while minimising disruption to road users and residents.

Award-Winning Delivery

The Carlingford Lough Greenway (Section III) is a showcase of engineering innovation, environmental stewardship, and community benefit. Its success was recognised with three major industry awards:

  • CEF 2025 Infrastructure Project of the Year (Below £10M)
  • Plant & Civil Engineer Construction Project of the Year 2025
  • Top Team Award (Plant & Civil Engineer 2025) for the site team responsible for delivery.
