Construction safety visit at Seagoe Primary School
The AG Wilson safety and project management teams recently visited Seagoe Primary School with BeSafe Bert to deliver a construction safety session for P1 pupils, alongside ongoing stormwater drainage works at Seagoe Gardens being carried out on behalf of Northern Ireland Water.
Where construction activity takes place close to schools, AG Wilson adopts a consistent approach to engaging with pupils and staff. Children will be walking or travelling past the works on a daily basis, and curiosity around construction activity and plant is something that is actively considered as part of site planning and risk management.
The session introduced pupils to common construction machinery, including excavators, bulldozers and cranes, and explained why it is important to keep a safe distance from working areas. The children also learned about the risks associated with excavations and loose materials typically found on civil engineering sites, using clear, age-appropriate examples.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including high-visibility clothing and safety helmets, was demonstrated by BeSafe Bert to help pupils understand how these items are used to protect people working on site. Pupils were encouraged to take part in the session and ask questions throughout.
After becoming official members of BeSafe Bert’s Safety Crew, each child received an activity pack to take home, along with a child-sized high-visibility vest and safety helmet party hat, providing a learning resource that can be shared at home.
This type of engagement forms part of AG Wilson’s Safety Built-In approach, ensuring that safety considerations extend beyond the site boundary and into the surrounding community.
AG Wilson thanks Seagoe Primary School for accommodating the visit and supporting the safety session.
