Glenmachan Strategic Phase 1
Project Details:
KR500 Glenmachan Strategic Phase 1B was a challenging NI Water project completed in the Glenmachan area of South Belfast.
This multi-agency project representing a £4million investment, was funded by NI Water and the Department for Infrastructure (Rivers). Phase 1B of the project was undertaken by A.G.Wilson with a contract value of £2.5M and focused primarily on Greystown Avenue, which had seen a number of flooding events on a yearly basis.
These flood alleviation works involved the construction of large diameter (750mm) twin pipelines, tying into the existing watercourse at Balmoral Golf Club and combined pipeline within Finnis Drive. As part of the 800m flood alleviation project, large box culverts measuring 3m x 2.5m and 1.8m x 1m were installed within tight site constraints. Further works included the demolition and re-construction of a garage, retaining wall and working in close proximity to a large number of services, including a 400mm trunk watermain
Due to the restricted works areas we encountered several challenges and worked closely with our approved supply chain members, who specialise in bespoke precast concrete works. A design was created to allow the culvert units to be installed in 2 sections where works space was limited. We also appointed Barideck Services to apply the Stirling Lloyd One Coat Eliminator System to the top to prevent any lying water penetrating through to the concrete surface.
The large combined sewer culverts were completed June 2019, with 1B phase of the project completed for handover October 2019, which included a full road reinstatement of all areas affected by the works.
